Why USFHP is Unique

US Family Health Plan offers active duty family members, activated National Guard and Reserve family members, and retirees and their family members patient-centered health care with the highest satisfaction level in the TRICARE system. Members have access to advanced medical care and services in the communities in which they live. Our providers have a deep understanding of military culture and of the unique components of care associated with the military community. Further, our program model provides taxpayers with value by incentivizing investment in wellness and prevention programs.

Patient-Centered Health Care Focused On Prevention

The US Family Health Plan providers pride themselves on offering world-class health care for their patients, including wellness and disease prevention programs, disease management, and continuity of care. The US Family Health Plans were among the first to implement the patient-centered medical home concept, and they have been pioneers in tele-medicine, 24-hour nurse help lines, and in-home patient monitoring. With more than 40 disease management programs, our patients experience improved health, more coordinated care, and require fewer emergency room visits and hospitalizations.

Highest Patient Satisfaction Within TRICARE

US Family Health Plan patients are extremely satisfied, as measured by industry standards. For 19 consecutive years, the US Family Health Plan has far surpassed the patient satisfaction rates of other managed care plans. Our overall satisfaction rate is more than 92 percent, according to the Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (CAHPS®) survey. That is 40 percent higher than the national average and much higher than the satisfaction rate reported by other eligible beneficiaries within the TRICARE system.

Deep Understanding Of Military Culture

The US Family Health Plan has been a leader in quality care for military families, retirees, and other beneficiaries in the Military Health System for more than 30 years. Our member providers understand military culture, values, and ideals. As a 2016 study from the University of Buffalo reinforced, this experience is crucial to understanding the unique stressors of military and post-military life and how military service impacts utilization.

Serving Members Where They Live

Our network of nearly 64,000 providers ensures easy access to community-based care for every beneficiary who resides in our service areas. Making appointments is fast and easy, and surveys indicate that more than nine out of 10 of our patients are able to get appointments when they need them.

Providing Value To Taxpayers

US Family Health Plan offers the only fixed-price, value-based capitated care program in the Military Health System. That means that US Family Health Plan member organizations are reimbursed at a fixed rate for the cost of all patient services. This arrangement incentivizes investment in population health and disease management programs that help people live healthier lives and avoid expensive episodes of inpatient care. Further, under federal law, the total cost for health care services under the US Family Health Plan cannot exceed the cost the federal government would have incurred if the same services had been provided through a military treatment facility, the TRICARE program, or the Medicare program.
